Quite simply....

The Edinburgh music scene has been bolstered in recent years by the folks who run some of the less mainstream musical events in the capital and by the tight knit community of artists regularly getting together to play in each other's bands and to put on shows.

The most recent example of this was Retreat! During the madness of August in Edinburgh, the brains behind The Gentle Invasion, Tracer Trails and Hollow Heart Parlour gave a home to some of the city's finest bands. The line up included The Pictish Trail, Emily Scott, Wounded Knee, Meursault and My Kappa Roots among many others. Retreat! also hosted the launch party for the long awaited release by eagleowl.

eagleowl are a lo-fi post folk trio who are just getting better each time I have had the pleasure of seeing them play. They "believe in doing things right, rather than doing things fast" and this is obvious with the release of their EP For The Thoughts You Never Had.

The songs are quite simply beautiful, they even make the word motherfucker sound delicate. You can listen to Mf and some more enchanting music at www.myspace.com/eagleowlattack.

More delicate musings from Edinburgh come in the form of Rob St John. To describe A Wooden Rose as beautiful would not do the song justice, for this and more music that might just bring a tear to your eye go to www.myspace.com/robstjohn.

I have mentioned Mark Hamilton here previously but this time he is back in the UK with the rest of Woodpigeon to support Calexico on their current tour.
Oberkampf is one of the most wonderful songs I have heard all year but make up your own mind by visiting www.woodpigeon-songbook.com. But don't stop with Oberkampf, keep listening as the lush, intricate, heartbreaking songs on both Songbook and Treasure Library Canada are very special indeed. Mark's quivering voice will captivate you as he tells tales of 'home as a romanticized concept where everyone loves you always and forever' and 'a sad country ballad for a tired superhero'. Try to catch them before Canada's best kept musical secret gets out.

Well, that's all for now, enjoy!
